I accidentally inhaled quite a bit of smoke from a burning paper towel. a few hours later and now my throat feels a bit sore. is this normal?

Should pass: Smoke & heat can both irritate your airway & the back of your mouth. Gargling with a bit of mouth rinse or sucking on ice chips may provide some relief, as would hard candy. By morning it should pass unless you truly scorched your airway, then it might take a little more time.

Yes, and no: It can be expected if you were in significant smoke, but it means there is some damage to the lining of your nose and throat. If you start having any trouble breathing go to the emergency room.
