See a Surgeon: If the umbilical hernia is causing discomfort you should see a general surgeon. He most likely will recommend repair of the hernia. You can see my video on hernias here: http://www.Jhsurgery.Com/2011/09/26/hernia/.

Get it fixed!: As long as you are more than 5 years old, ventral umbilical hernias should be repaired surgically with mesh. Complications of incarceration, strangulation, and bowel obstruction are possible over time as these defects in the abdominal wall enlarge. See a general surgeon for examination promptly.

Have Surgery: If you have severe, constant pain, see a general surgeon or go to the er right away. Since you have an umbilical hernia and pain, you should see a general surgeon soon anyways, and he or she will probably recommend to have it fixed. It is a very common surgery, and most people do quite well. Recovery time depends on how big the hernia is, and if it was repaired open or laparoscopically.
