Arthritis: The ligaments allow the scaphoid to rotate during wrist flexion and extension. When the repair has failed there is undue wear and tear on the scaphoid causing arthritis that can interfere with the proximal and distal rows of the carpal bones producing a slac wrist. This may best be treated with scaphoid removal and/or replacement and/or partial wrist fusion.

Surgery for arthriti: This is a common surgery for arthritis on the thumb side of the wrist either from old ligament injury or scaphoid fractures. It involves remove the scaphoid bone and then fusing the remaining bodes so they do not slip/migrate.
