Yes: It's fair to say that any time, not just when he is ready to depart somewhere. The more you remind him of this but more so when you put your words in action such as sending him a card or a gift or give him a phone call will help you achieve your goal.

Very sweet.: Going off to college and maintaining intimate relationships with your friends and family are not mutually exclusive. I'm sure he'll find a way to stay close - through letters, phone calls, and visits - while still fully enjoying the college experience.
