A member asked:

My dad had prostrate cancer and had laser surgery to remove it . now the doctors want to see if the cancer went to the bone marrow.. is this normal practice?

Normal to check: It is not uncommon to stage the cancer by making sure there has been no extension to bone. A bone scan will tell them if there has been any spread. This sets the baseline and can be used in the future to follow any possible recurrence of his cancer and may help determine how to best treat it now.

Yes: Any time someone has cancer they should be staged. Which means look for other places where that cancer goes, and prostate cancer does tend to go to the bone. This staging process helps to recommendnthe best treatment for your dads particular cancer.
