I believe my daughter was misdiagnosed as having epilepsy because her seizures are the results of a metabolic disturbance. the drs. do not care what we've told them. how do we confirm diagnosis? last 2 eeg's were normal, the first 2 were slightly abnor

Time will tell: Rule of thumb is two years seizure free on medications deserves a trial off medication. If seizure free off medication for more than 3 months, the prognosis for seizure freedom is excellent. The diagnosis of epilepsy is not the issue. The issue is whether she needs chronic medications. A plan for gentle withdrawal from medication is reasonable. Eeg is not useful other than supportive.

see neurologist: Specifically, i would have her see an epileptologist. That's a neurologist with special training in seizures and epilepsy.

Need another opinion: Generally, seizures that result from metabolic abnormalities are not considered epilepsy. Epilepsy is the label used for seizures that arise from a brain abnormality, not metabolic abnormalities. If you do not feel you are communicating effectively with your doctor, get another opinion with someone who will listen to you.
