Nuclear medicine: Term. Hot or cold nodule refers to the ability of the thyroid lesion to take up radio-labelled iodine and is done by nuclear medicine. Once the nodule is removed, hot or cold is not an issue and a pathologist will determine what kind of lesion is in the nodule.

No: You can tell if something is "hot" or "cold" on a thyroid scan. We use it to decide what to do with the nodule. Once it's removed, it doesn't matter if it's hot or cold. You will not be able to tell with certainty once it's removed.
