Discuss this with Dr: Solid thyroid nodules can be either hot (active) or cold (inactive). Both are only rarely malignant but cold are more often. The various diagnostic methods (labs, biopsies, scans) may or may not fully tell what this one is, but work with your dr and ask for explanations. Thyroid scan: You can't tell if a nodule is hot or cold for sure on a thyroid ultrasound. A test called thyroid uptake and scan is what's needed to determine if a nodule is hot or cold.
