Watch & wait: Usually tender nodes in the neck area represent the body fending off an infection. Taking an advil (ibuprofen) is usually all that is needed. If the node persists for more than two weeks or becomes larger than an inch in diameter, a visit to your doctor is in order.

Needs to be seen: Have your swollen area be looked at by a doctor. Most of the time, in a case of a skin disorder or lesion, doctors recommend an exam to determine what type of lesion you have. It is good to know exact location, size, color, texture, associated symptoms, previous similar history, possible trauma to same area, family history of skin disorder.
