Maybe neither....: I'm not sure I have enough information to tell you what is going on. What type of hernia? Do you have problems swallowing? Or just a gag reflex? This is probably better suited for an in-person visit to determine what is going on. Sorry nobody has helped thus far.

Hiatal hernia: Large hiatal hernias can cause this. See your doctor to order an upper GI contrast study to see if you have a large hiatal hernia, also known as a para esophageal hernia. If you do have one, see a general surgeon with experience in hiatal hernia repair for a consultation.
