Lifestyle: Proper nutrition (get a book called foods that fight pain by neal barnard, md), moderate exercise outdoors in the sun (vitamin d), proper hydration, avoidance of common oxidants like tobacco, pacing activities, etc. If you do not accomplish these, medications (such as tylenol (acetaminophen) and non-steroidals), injections (corticosteroids and viscosupplements), physical therapy, and/or surgery are next.

Depends on grade: Early arthritis is controlled by activity modifications, regular low impact exercise, anti-inflammatory medicines, maintaining ideal body weight, glucosamine and chondroiton supplements, and knee sleeves. As it advances, then injectable options, including steroids and Hyaluronate become available. Finally, at end stages, surgeries, including partial and full knee replacement are the best option.
