Antibiotics in labor: Approximately one in five women are carriers for gbs. It is not a sexually transmitted disease. If you test positive then you will need antibiotics in labor. This is very important as gbs infection can cause serious complications for the baby if infected. Antibiotics in labor are very effective at preventing these complications.

Depends on situation: This is a hitch hiker germ that is found occasionally in the digestive tract (poop) and generally causes no problems. It is sometimes a cause of UTI's in women. It can come & go as a germ in female genital tract. It becomes worrisome if your have it during labor/delivery when it could pass to a newborn & cause dreadful disease. IV antibiotics are given in labor to prevent that, oral meds won't do.
