Retained Stones: Gallstones may occasionally exit the gallbladder & get stuck in the bile ducts that connect the liver to the intestine. If these go unnoticed at the time of surgery, these may later cause gallbladder-like symptoms (even)months after surgery--these are called retained stones. Very rarely, new stones may form in the bile duct (even)years after surgery--these are called recurrent stones.

Not usually: Surgery is performed that removes the gallstones & the gallbladder so that gallstones cannot recur. There would be a very rare possibility that a gallstone would remain or recur in the bile duct itself.
