Yes, but…: It's not a drug chosen for first line defense because it is broad spectrum & can lead to resistant bacteria. If this is a routine strep throat, a modified penicillin like Augmentin (amoxicillin and clavulanate) or a macrolide like biaxin might be a better choice. Save the "big guns" for more serious infections.

More than you need: It will kill the strep, but it's "overkill, " meaning that it's active against a lot more bacteria than just strep. Like putting out a patch with a fire hose.
