See a doctor now: Peritonsillar abscess occurs when an tonsil infection gets out of control, and causes a pocket of pus between the tonsil and the muscle. It generally requires drainage by an ENT specialist, appropriate antibiotics, and sometimes steroids. The symptoms are pain and swelling one side of throat, difficulty swallowing, pain on opening the mouth, and a tender lymph node on the worse side.
