See a Dermatologist: Discoid lupus causes a scarring type of hair loss and must be treated early and aggressively to prevent permanent damage to the hair follicles. Treatments include shots of cortisone into the skin, topical medications and systemic medications. If caught early, it can be halted and some hair loss reversed. It can be permanent if not treated promptly, however.
