Pain and swelling: Typically, one will have pain, swelling, loss of motion and bruising. In more severe fractures, you can see rotational or angular malalignment. Best to have an xray to definitively check for a fracture.

Exam, xray: Exam looks at motion, alignment. Swelling, stiffness, sensation, lack of feeling normal and persistant pain even after the time when a simple contusion may be better and an xray is ordered early or late based upon suspicions.
