A member asked:

Why did a dilated eye exam hurt so much today? i think they had the light turned up high. could it be photophobia?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Light sensitivity: Dilation opens the eye so your ophthalmologist can see the periphery of the retina. Because of the increased light input, the eye is uncomfortable with this and going outside afterwards in the sun can be painful. This is temporary photophobia which will disappear when the dilation recovers.
