Surgery +/- RT: First-line therapy for dcis is surgery, which may involve a lumpectomy or a mastectomy, depending upon the growth pattern of the dcis. Following lumpectomy, radiation therapy (rt) is often recommended to lower the risk of cancer recurrence. Furthermore, tamoxifen may be recommended to prevent a second breast cancer from developing.

Depends: Dcis can have a wide range of presentations and therefore has a wide range of treatment options - every case is different. Some cases may be observed or treated with surgery alone; more often, surgery followed by radiation therapy and possibly anti-estrogen therapy may be needed. Dcis may be very widespread throughout the breast, and mastectomy may be required.
