Drainage: The telltale sign of a wound infection is purulent drainage ("pus"). Other signs include redness, swelling, a fever, the wound edges separating, and blood-tinged drainage.

Surgical wound : There are several things to look for: redness, pain, drainage, change in drainage, swelling, odor, fever, chills, shaking (known as rigors). If you have any questions then i would recommend seeing the surgeon as soon as you can.
