Why is it difficult for older people to start a new sexual relationship?

Dr. Pamela Pappas answered

Specializes in Psychiatry

"older" people may share many of the uncertainties and anxieties of younger people, plus they also know how relationships can go painfully wrong. They may have fears about their own attractiveness and desirability; may also doubt their ability to sexually satisfy their new partner. And yet, romance between mature people can be sweet and tender. Very different from movie star exploits. :-).

As people age along with good experiences they also experience the inevitable disappointments, betrayals of trust and losses. This can make it hard to start again. This kind of block can be helped by a Clinical Psychologist with expertise in multiple types of psychotherapy.
