What over-the-counter (otc) medications can i give my child for a cold?

None: These are no longer recommeded for children as the risk of the meds is greater than any benefit. I recommend for my patients just nasal saline spray, tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen, and plenty of liquids.

The way things were: Years ago we used these and even prescribed some combo meds that are now OTC.It didn't do much, but it gave parents something to do.Over time the analysis of ER visits showed a striking number of self medicating kids seen for toxic overdoses. We have not advised the use of these for more than a decade, but the products are still out there.Rest/fluids/proper nutrition & time & the kid will get better
