Help with breathing : An endotracheal tube can help protect the airway as well as allow easier mechanical ventilation for a premature infant. The medical staff may also use the "tube" to administer surfactant to keep the lungs inflated.

We miss something ??: This insures an adequate airway and allows for delivery of oxygen and or medications to a baby who is not breathing adequately on their own. Did you have some specific concern ?
