Mostly infection: A nephrostomy tube drains urine directly from the kidney to an external bag. The most common complications are infections of the tube. Other problems can be pain at the skin site or in the kidney, blockage of the tube that requires replacement or bleeding with initial placement.

Several steps.: Nephrostomy tubes are most often placed by interventional radiologists (ir). First, you may receive a mild sedative. Ir uses fluoroscopes to find the kidney. The skin at the site of the tube is numbed with local anesthetic. A needle is placed through the skin and into the kidney's urinary space. A wire is guided into the kidney, the needle removed, and then the nephrostomy tube is deployed.

Bleeding, infection: A percutaneous (through the skin) nephrostomy tube is generally placed when there is obstruction to the flow of urine into the bladder such as a large kidney stone. It is usually placed by a radiologist with the aid of xray equipment. Bleeding may occur during placement and if left for a long period of time, the tube may become infected.

I was intimate with my husband and I have a nephrostomy tube, how can I tell if it has been dislodged?

Usually marked: Often a tube is marked or taped at a certain point, so you can visually see if it is further out. If urine is still draining through it, that should suggest it is still in the right place. If it no longer drains, has blood, or you start having pain or signs of illness get checked right away as it may have moved.

Here are some ...: What you saw in the bag could be "normally" expected as long as urine is draining and you're comfortable & afebrile but soreness from the procedures. For more details, ask your treating Doc timely.
