Most take shifts: A physician in any role develops whatever method of coverage to get the job done. In a small program, an intensivist might share duties with a pulmonary specialist and or hospitalist, each doing whatever they can to share responsibilities. As the program grows, additional intensivists would make up a specialty group and each would take turns doing after hour work or shifts.
