Get checked: If you cannot stand or walk on the ankle due to pain, and if the ankle is very swollen and painful, go to an Urgent Care Center for an evaluation. If Ice, Elevation, and Motrin or Tylenol (acetaminophen) are allowing you to walk around without much swelling or pain, then this injury is more likely an ankle sprain. Pain exists to tell you something is wrong - if it hurts when you walk after an injury, seek help.

The Standing Test...: Look!!! If you try to stand on your foot and the pain is so intense that you cannot bear weight at all, then you need to go to the emergency room. More than likely the damage is more severe. Otherwise, keep your foot elevated, apply some cold pack and use crutches. The less added trauma you subject your ankle to, by walking on it, the faster the condition will resolve.
