Yes: Block basements and old cisterns are often associated with mold growth. Exposure to molds has been associated with a variety of respiratory disorders and should be avoided. Mold grows best in wet areas so it is important to keep basements dry and avoid household water leaks. If visible mold is present in a house it should be removed/treated by an expert.

Chemicals: If it is newly painted there may be release of volatile organic compounds (voc's). If newly carpetted; synthetic carpet can release odors from both formaldehyde and voc's. Either of these issues can trigger asthma.

air it out, keep windows open when possible, use a fan. Certain plants can absorb the chemicals and help you to breathe easier.

Not related : Respiratory quotient is a number derived from the equation - amount of carbon dioxide produced divided by amount of oxygen consumed. It is used in some equations to calculate basal metabolic rate and is helpful in pulmonary exercise testing . As such it does not affect an individual's lung function in any manner. Some patients with COPD during hospitalization are put on a low carbohydrate diet.
