Why do people say mammograms save lives?

CuzThey DO SaveLives: The basic premise is that if you find breast cancer before it causes symptoms, it is less likely to have spread outside the breast, w/a much higher chance for cure. This has been proven looking at population studies beginning in the 1960's, showing that women (over 50) who have mammograms will suffer less deaths from breast cancer than women who forego screening. It is truly a lifesaver.

Early detection: Mammography detects cancers up to several years before they can be felt. In general, the earlier the diagnosis - the better (and easier) the treatment.
