What is a definition of otolaryngology?

23 doctors weighed in across 6 answers

ENT: Oto = ear. Laryn = larynx=voice box implying throat, ology = study of. Used to be otorhinolaryngology with rhino = nose, so otolaryngology is the study of ear, nose and throat diseases. Often the term now is otolaryngology/head and neck surgery, since ents take care of other diseases of the head and neck including diseases of the sinuses, neck, and skull base.

Definition: Technically speaking, otolaryngology is the studying ears and throat conditions. However it is known to also include diseases of the nose and neck as well as conditions of the thyroid, parathyroid, and windpipe.A more complete term would be "otorhinolaryngology", but that is just too darn hard to remember.
