Virus vs. Bacteria: Pus on the tonsils can either be a viral infection or a bacterial infection. The symptoms are consistent with tonsillitis. The ideal sequence of treatment would be 1.) culture the throat 2.) wait for the culture report and 3.) treat specifically. In the meantime, drink a lot of fluids and take some otc pain meds.

Strep thoat: Sounds like it could be strep throat in which case you need an antibiotic. Only way to tell is to see your physician and have him culture it.
