Why is it unsafe to use deet bug sprays on children?

DEET bug spray: When used in concentraions of 10% and lower, deet insect repellents are safe. Higher doses cause neurotoxicity like slurred speech, confusion, and seizures. The product should be applied to clothing when possible, and the hands, eyes, and mouths of young children should be avoided.

Not unsafe: No deet under 2 months of age. Deet seems as safe in concentrations of 30% as in concentrations of 10 % says american academy of pediatrics. Figure how long you will be outdoors. 10 % deet is effective for about 2 hours; 24 % deet protects, for ~ 5 hours. Up to 30% is safe. When applying on your child, avoid putting on their hands, near their mouth or eyes. Do not put under clothes.
