A member asked:

How long will hoarseness last after thyroidectomy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It depends: If the recurrent larnyngeal nerve or the superior laryngeal nerve (nerves that control your vocal cords for voice) was stretched, bruised, or mildly injured (not cut), then recovery can take weeks to months. If the nerve was cut, regardless of the reason, hoarseness may be permanent but there exceptions to this. You should see your surgeon regularly during this period.
