Teething: If a pacifier is not successful, a clean cold washcloth or cold teething ring can be tried. The teething ring should be made of solid rubbery material - not fluid-filled. Acetaminophen by nouth can also give relief irritability. Do not use preparations with Benzocaine because it is harmful to baby's blood.

Try: Oral topical anesthetics are usually ineffective. If needed use baby Motrin or tylenol (acetaminophen). You can also try chilling a pacifier or teething ring.

Conservative.: If you baby is under 2 DO NOT use teething gel with benzocaine. Try liquid analgesics such as Tylenol (acetaminophen) and Motrin and also cold teething rings from the refrigerator, not the freezer. The rubbery kind (without liquid) is best. If your child uses a pacifier you can also keep one in the fridge to use.
