Urinary catheter.: For long procedures, or for surgeries where urine output monitoring is important, a urinary (foley) catheter is placed while you are under anesthesia. This drains the bladder into a container. The catheter is removed in the recovery room or later in the inpatient ward. For short procedures, no catheter is used and you are given a urinal in recovery.
