See your dentist: Root canal therapy should have removed the nerves from your tooth, rendering it free of infection and pain. Pain now may be an indication of a fractured tooth root, or a stubborn infection that may require additional treatment. In either case, it is imperative that you see your dentist.

Get it checked: Sometimes even after root canal treatment and crown, the tooth can develop a vertical fracture or a recurrence of the abscess can occur. It is best to see a dentist or endodontist(root canal specialist) to determine the problem.

Revision or implant: Pain years after root canal may be due to several factors, like possible root crack that irritates suraunding tissues , root canal failure, causing what is called- cyst formation, attached to the root tip. Solutions? 1: your dentist may refer you to an endodontist for treatment revision. 2: sometimes to extract the troubled tooth and replace with dental implant may be better treatment option.

Remove it: The discomfort is due to a failed root canal or a fractured root. I would recommend removal and the placement of a dental implant.

MicroscopEndodontist: Many root canal failures occur years after the original completion. It takes time for any nerve tissue not found and removed to become infected and for toxic products to make there way to the root ends and cause problems. Many of these cases can be retreated successfully by a competent microscopically trained endodontist!
