Cardiovascular: Metoprolol lowers blood pressure by lowering heart rate. By doing so, it reduces adverse vascular events like heart attack and stroke. It is also used in heart failure to prevent worsening of the heart muscle. It can also be used to control heart rate in patients who have abnormal heart rhythms such as atrial fibrillation.
