Sciatica: It appears your husband may have a disc herniation. He's experiencing weakness and numbness down the leg because of a nerve root irritation. He needs to be seen as soon as possible by orthopedic spinal specialist. An MRI of the lumbar spine and x-rays will be needed.

Nerve: It sounds like he has ruptured a disc with resulting pressure and irritation of a nerve root. Without further information & evaluation, I am unable to tell which level is involved. I would recommend that you contact your pcp for immediate examination. He will get the proper diagnostic studies and refer you to an appropriate specialist as needed.
