R.I.C.E.: ( r ) est: if the pain is continual, rest is an important way to prevent further injury. ( i )ce: for a 20-minute cycle apply a towel- wrapped ice pack to the sprain (20 minute on and 20 minutes off). ( c )ompression: to help restrict the swelling wrap an elastic bandage tightly around the injury. ( e )levation: elevate the ankle to even with your heart. This aids fluid away from the injury.

Ice.: Ice for 20 minutes at a time, 3-4 times per day. Take an anti-inflammatory medication, over the counter. Initiate physical therapy for strengthening.

RICE: In general, the best way to treat any sprain or strain is by the rice protocol...Rest, ice, compression (wrap), elevation....As long as you have no contraindications, use of an NSAID is usually helpful as well... Ibuprofen or Naproxen are two over the counter options....As the swelling subsides, gentle start range of motion exercises by making circles in the air with the ankle in all directions...

Yes: Anterior( usually) tbiofibular ankle spains ( high ankle sprains ) are particularly common in football . ( see my previous answer on this type of ankle sprain). They are less common than your 'typical' ankle sprain( anterior talofiblular sprain) and can take longer to heal! see an orthopedic surgeon to evaluate and treat this type of ankle sprain!good luck!

It Depends: There are differing opinions with this subject. But a high ankle sprain needs to be immobilized, usually in a boot, sometimes walking and others using crutches to start with. The recovery time is usually longer than a standard ankle sprain. On occasion if there is a major tear of the ligament, surgery can be needed to fix it.
