Nutrients: An essential nutrient is a nutrient that the body needs, but cannot manufacture in an adequate amount. The body has many chemical reactions that occur and often these reactions require the nutrients in some manner. Deficiencies of these nutrients can lead to serious illness. Some examples include: vitamin c (scurvy); vitamin d (rickets); thiamine (beriberi); Niacin (pellagra).
