Variea: First, it depends on the size of the curve and the underlying health of the patient. There are certain syndromes that have scoliosis as a feature that also have other significant health issues including the heart, for example. Very large curves can affect lung function. For more simple curves needing surgery in a healthy teenagers or young adults the risks are amall done by a spine surgeon.
