YA Diabetes big baby: Diabetic mothers usually have periods of high blood sugar and that causes the growing baby to absorb more glucose and thus more fat is stored. Infant of diabetic mothers(idm) need to be observed after birth for developing low blood sugars and are large for age (large for gestational age=lga). These babies can be typically over 9 lbs or larger (macrosomic).
