PPROM: It is not entirely clear why some women experience preterm premature rupture of membranes, while others don't. Some risk factors for water breaking before 37 weeks gestation include a history of pprom in a previous pregnancy, genital tract infection, bleeding from the vagina, and cigarette smoking.

Infxn/pressure/other: Rom is the rupture of membranes causing amniotic fluid to leak from the bag of waters. Prom or premature rupture of membranes before onset of labor. Preterm premature rupture of membranes occurs before a pregnancy reaches term. No matter why/when it occurs, an opening in the amniotic membrane or bag of waters sets in motion events that can lead to intection. So doctors may need to take action.
