Dr.'s exam can tell: A whitish spot might be eczema, especially if it is a bit dry or itches a bit. A primary care doctor or a dermatologist can look at it if it doesn't go away with simple treatment. Sometimes the spot can be a birthmark, ringworm (fungus), or some other disorder. Simple treatment of a spot (non-fungus, non-birthmark) means trying over-the-counter Hydrocortisone 1% cream three-times-a-day for a week.
