Why is a splenectomy done for thrombocytic purpura?

To save platlets: In itp idiopathic( or immune) thrombocytic purpura, the antibody coated platelets, along with normal platelets are destroyed in spleen to a dangerously tow levels, if medications fails to improve, splenectomy still remains as effective method of treatment, prevents the destruction of platelets, despite of some untoward effects due to removal.

stop platelet destr: Idiopathic thrombocytic purpura is a disease whereby your immune system develops antibodies against itself, specifically your platelets which are important for preventing or stopping bleeding. Your spleen is the organ responible for collecting and destroying your platelets. Therefore those patients whose disease is not responive to medications may require spenectomy to decrease their destrucion.
