A bacterium: V. Parahaemolyticus is found in warm ocean water and is classically transmitted to humans by eating raw shellfish, especially oysters. The finding of this organism in sea water or shellfish does not at all imply sewage contamination. Because of global warming, oysters harvested as far north as alaska have acquired the organism where in the past it was mostly gulf of mexico shellfish.
