NO: Metformin is not a drug for weight loss. It's main use is for diabetics and patients who may be "pre-diabetic". If your doctor prescribed this for you speak with him again as to why he wants you on this medicine.

Not usually..: While weight loss may occur while taking metformin, weight loss is not usually the reason the medicine is prescribed. The drug does have to be taken under the supervision of a prescribing doctor.
