No: No, varicose veins are never normal. They are very common and become increasingly common with age but varicose veins are a manifestation of part of a body system that is failing, or has failed. So varicose veins are never normal.

Varicose Veins Cause: No, it is not normal to get varicose veins, but it is a common condition. The abnormality usually arises as a result of a predisposed genetic weakness of the valves within certain veins of the legs. As the valves fail, the blood pools inside the veins causing pressure build-up and bulging of the veins. It tends to get worse with time. I suggest a vascular surgeon evaluate them for treatment.

Not normal.: Varicose veins are bulging grape-like appearing veins in the legs are are usually due to malfunctioning (refluxing) valves in the saphenous system. They are not normal and they could lead to many potential problems. You should see a vein specialist for a full venous evaluation including a venous reflux exam.

Very Common: Close to 15% of the population will get varicose veins and another 35% will get some other vein issues. While not normal they are very common. The biggest risk factor is genetics, followed by age, female gender, sedentary lifestyle and others. The good news is they can be easily treated if they cause symptoms. I would recommend you see a vein specialist if they are a concern.
