To Pap or Not to Pap: Yearly pap smear is not recommended in any country in the world including the U.S. In a few hi risk individuals with hpv infection, it may be warranted. The first pap starts after age 21 or 2 yrs after the onset of sexual intercourse and continues into the 50's. Most countries recommend paps every 3-5 years in average risk patients. There is no evidence yearly paps prevent more cancers.

Not for average risk: Average risk women can space out their pap smear testing (screening for cervical cancer) to every 2 years between age 21 and 30 and then may increase to every 3 years if they are negative for hpv. Some guidelines allow pap testing every 3 years for average risk women even if hpv status is unknown.
