Cold teething ring: A chilled teething ring chills the nerve endings causing discomfort & slow the pain messages sent to the brain. Several chilled rings can be rotated in/out as needed & chilled to use repeatedly. Some parents see benefit with painting some liquid benedryl on the gums but this can be messy & lasts only a few minutes.

Teething painful?: There is no evidence that teething is actually painful. If your child is having pain in the mouth there could be another cause. Your child may be experiencing an itchy or uncomfortable feeling from the teething and just may need to use a teething ring with ridges to scratch the gums to comfort. Some have suggested that a child's first exposure to hsv is often mistaken as pain due to teething.

Frozen washcloth : I am glad you are hesitant to use orajel on your 6 month old because some children can have deadly side effects to orajel. Try placing a clean wet washcloth in the freezer for a couple of hours then offer to your baby to gnaw on. The cold will ease the gums and it will clean the area at the same time.

See below: If your child is experiencing more severe pain, Motrin or tylenol (acetaminophen) can be used as needed. (follow instructions on box). A chilled teething ring or pacifier can also be soothing.
