Pain medicine: You should take strong pain medicine to relax. I would not recommend Aspirin though, since Aspirin increases risk of bleeding. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or weak opioid such as vicodin may work. I would ask your doctor to prescibe the medicine. A cold compression on the front of the neck, sipping ice, or icecream also may help.

Get the INFO: The best way is to get all the info you can about your surgery. Make sure you know what to expect, what to do before, and what to do after. Know how to get a hold of your doctor if there is a problem. This knowledge will give you that sense of calm. Otherwise, make sure you take your pain medicine every 4-6 hours as directed by your md. Even if you have to wake up from sleep to take it.

Many Ways: Anxiety before surgery is to be expected. I suggest methods of relaxation such as meditation, music, exercise, sexual activity (protection), moderate use of alcohol (if ok with surgeon), family/friends support. I also ask patients to remember that objectively speaking, they should be aware that they will be safer during the time of surgery that driving on the freeway. Best wishes.
